X3 Problem with Scanners on Windows 8.1

I've read a few threads about scanner driver issues and 64 bit Windows with various versions of Draw.  A number of people have said that a 64 bit TWAIN driver must be available if the OS is 64 bit, but that most TWAINS are only 32 bit.  My scanner is an Epson Perfection V500, and Epson says it's compatible with Windows 8 - 64.  But I have a really weird issue.  Though old, I loaded DRAW X3 on 64 bit Windows 8 and everything worked fine.   When I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I noticed that both the Select Source and Acquire were grayed out in DRAW File.  I ran a restore on DRAW and the scanner was now available.  HOWEVER, almost all of the metro style apps open and then go off screen, but don't close.  In any case they don't run, just start and disappear.  If I do a System Restore from a resort point, all the apps work fine, but no access to the TWAIN driver in DRAW.  Since the scanner and driver work fine if I recover or re-install DRAW under Win 8.1, there isn't a compatibility issue with the scanner and DRAW finds the driver, but all the apps die.  Going to the restore point fixes the apps and kills access to the scanner by DRAW.  I have a feeling this is a registry incompatibility of some sort but am not sure.  Does anyone have an idea?  I can always run Epson Scan stand alone and save to the desktop or elsewhere and then open in DRAW, but who wants that extra work.  Thanks for any help you can give me.
