RAW file in Photopaint - How to Start

GOAL:  Prepare an image of animal/pet in Photopaint X6 to print 8 x10 or maybe larger using a digital photo printing service (not yet selected.)

I have some photos that I want to manipulate to get nice prints to frame and hang on the wall. My photos aren’t particularly good. I have wobbly camera syndrome (yeah, I know I should use a tripod, but you try and chase a horse around the pasture with a tripod. The horse is either in another county or is trying to eat the tripod.)

I opened a RAW file in Photopaint and opened the same file in View NX2. In Photopaint, the image lacked quality when compared to viewing the image in View NX2. I somewhat understand that I will have to consider aspect ratio when resizing for print. I do not understand optimum dpi for printing. But I haven’t even got that far yet. I was tinkering with converting to 48-bit TIFF and haven’t been doing too well. [I came across a CODEC for Nikon files; I think it was from Microsoft but don’t have it installed because I don’t like to install stuff without knowing what I’m doing.]

QUESTION:  Can someone please suggest the best output format to get my RAW files to Photopaint?

Info (that seemed pertinent) from View NX2:

4928 x 3264

Compressed RAW 14-bit

sRGB
