This is weird. Any guesses what is happening?

Beginning a few weeks ago I began having problems with bitmap objects in Coreldraw.  Sometimes the problem occurs with cmyk bitmaps displaying improperly in coreldraw and printing improperly (going dark, as though they have a 60% black overall tint, disappearing after the cdw file is saved and reopened, appearing again during print setup). That problem appears to be that coreldraw doesn't like cmyk images.

Tonight I've discovered a new problem in 2 different cdw files.

Using the rooster as an example, my original artwork consisting of an assemblage of 76 coreldraw objects:

I exported the above object to an rgb jpg, imported that jpg into corel photo paint and added various special effects to produce a new jpg...

...that I then imported into the same cdw work file as an rgb bitmap and added a shadow box:

Everything was fine through months of opening and closing the cdw file until tonight when the above object (bitmap+corel box) look like it's been bleached:

Ungrouping accomplishes nothing, the bitmap is still doing a ghost thing.

So this is how the file objects display.  The problem also appears in wireframe view.

I had to reinstall Corel x6 a few weeks ago but the problems didn't appear until a few days after that reinstall so I don't think it's related.
